Records show that the official Malt Shovel Angling Club was established in 1947, but locals talk of it being even older!
After the Second World War, a small group of fishermen who frequented the Malt Shovel after fishing the local canal and rivers, began to meet regularly in the Malt and decided to form an angling club. The Malt Shovel Angling Club has never faltered since those early days, and after almost 70 years, is still one of the largest and strongest fishing clubs in the area.
We are proud to say that the trophy charts from 1947 are still on display in the Malt, along with numerous historical photgraphs of the members.
In recent years the club continues to thrive and carries a strong membership. But the Malt Shovel Angling Club is always open to applications for membership, especially from Shardlow residents or regulars to the Malt Shovel.
The club arranges matches throughout the year, numbering 17 in total, all within a 50 mile radius of Shardlow. There is also one long weekend of fishing away from the area.
Anyone wishing further details of membership can contact the club secretary, Steve Craner, on 07837 649070.
We need to ensure that this historic angling club is maintained for future generations.
